Wow, I grew up in Brooklyn..Flatbush...in a 3 story Victorian home with a basement. Just as said here, the bathroom was on the second floor with the bedrooms and there was another on the top floor, with smaller bedrooms. I wondered why they didn't have a private toilet on the ground floor and now I see why. It just wasn't being done. I saw photos of bathrooms that reminded me of ones I'd experienced living in England. The flat I shared had separate loo and then a room with a sink and tub, literally a bathroom. In the 1970s when I was apartment hunting in the upper east and west side (Manhattan) I did see small apartments with the tub in the kitchen. I didn't rent one. Thanks for the memories and the information. I had no idea that plumbing was so ancient (before the Roman baths) and it is one of my favorites in the comforts and privileges of the modern era.
